The Kids Bully Defense Summer Course offered by Close Range Tactics and ICBJJ is the best way to prepare your kids 10 - 13 years old to be able to handle difficult situations involving Bullies and interpersonal violence. Kids in middle school are most likely to experience Bullying and interpersonal violence more than any other youth age group. In a U.S. Department of Education survey more than 30% of 6th graders (~11 year olds) reported being the victim of bullying at least once during the school year. Students who are bullied at school are also more likely to be the victim of a crime at school (theft, assault, etc.) (source). Interpersonal violence amongst school aged children begins to rapidly increase upon starting middle school, with upwards of 40% of children in this age group having at least one fight in a 12 month period. A Department of Justice report shows that at least 30% of that the social challenges children face often rapidly escalate to physical fights due to not having a more appropriate skill set for solving such problems. It is critical to give children the skills to defend themselves from violence and bullying with not only a strong physical skill set but also a robust social and non-physical one. Which is exactly what our Kids Bully Defense Summer Course will do. We have been teaching age appropriate and humane self-defense skills to kids and teens since 2008. Much longer than anyone else in the region. The curriculum is designed by Jason Clarke and is based on real world and common situations children of various ages may find themselves in regards to bullying and interpersonal violence. These strategies and tactics have been proven time and time again by our young students to be very effective for dealing with bullies and interpersonal situations with the potential for fighting. Seminar: Shivworks Edged Weapons Overview We are proud to be hosting Craig Douglas (southnarc) of Shivworks to teach his amazing Edged Weapons Overview (EWO) course. This is the first time Craig has taught in Iowa City so you don't want to miss out on this opportunity if you're local. Craig is one of the most sought after instructors in the self-defense industry and training with him is definitely an amazing experience. Course Synopsis: The Edged Weapons Overview course is a two-day (16-hour) focused overview of knife application methods. Lots of people carry pocket knives for various reasons, but very few people have any training on how to deploy them effectively for self-defense. This course gives students a fundamental understanding of edged weapons. Like all ShivWorks courses, EWO is contextualized and presented through a minimalist framework to give students practical tools they can easily learn, remember, and put to immediate use. CLOSE RANGE PISTOL DEFENSIVE TACTICS - 4/14/2018
A significant percentage of aggravated assaults are ultimately perpetrated inside a range of 5 yards. They frequently involve weapons of some sort, and are often carried out by multiple individuals. It is critical that our training reflect these difficult realities. If you carry a firearm for defensive purposes or are considering it, this course is for you. Deeply understanding when, where, and how to use firearms defensively is extremely important, but unfortunately the overwhelming majority of state-mandated instruction does not adequately address it. Validating our skills and knowledge under pressure is something we would prefer to do from the safety of a formal training environment, rather than in the moment, unexpectedly, against a real motivated attacker. Proper training can help us better understand the context in which force is appropriate. Topics covered include conflict avoidance and managing an unknown contact, the legalities of force including use of weapons, proper timing of weapon access, using and defending against strikes, entangled fighting and accessing defensive tools when entangled. This hands on course will provide students with a skill set that has been pressure tested through force on force drills that they can have confidence in.
